Intercultural Competence with Novels
Where does culture belong in a course emphasizing comprehensible input? Teaching culture as content can lead to unpredictable L1 conversations. Teaching intercultural skills, like communication and perspective-taking, however, is compatible with CI. You will leave this session with a broader understanding of what "teaching culture" can be and specific strategies to build intercultural competence using the culture already present in novels.

WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT
The common complaint about graphic novels is that they hardly have any text. How is it possible to teach a language with a story that contains so little language?  And yet minimal text is the secret weapon that makes the graphic novel such a powerful medium for coaxing readers towards fluency. Visual immersion allows for complex stories without complex language. Join us as we build proficiency through the unique traits of graphic novels.

Picture Talk: From Community Building to Developing Fluency
Picture Talk is a very powerful Comprehensible Input technique that can give you a break from the stories, while still keeping your input comprehensible and engaging. Picture Talk can allow you to explore different topics, introduce new concepts and vocabulary before reading a class novel, and most importantly, it is a great way to build a strong class community. In this workshop you will learn the different ways you can do a Picture Talk in your class, including setting up the foundations for developing community through pictures. This technique allows students to learn about each other, and in higher levels, it allows you to tackle difficult topics that require reflection and discussion. It is a great technique to prepare students for the IB oral exam and the debates they have to face in more advanced settings.

Warm Up Their Ears to Increase Acquisition
Students leave our classrooms daily and many never hear the target language for at least 24 hours or more. This session will demonstrate how to use current events, short video clips or any topic to create opportunities for students to story listen. This is an effective way to begin class and "warm up" the students' ears at the beginning of each period assisting teachers to keep to 90% target language in the class.

The session will begin with a demonstration of a comprehensible input story based on a clip or good news event. After modeling the strategy, I will ask participants to share what types of story listening they are doing in their classes. I will then display a power point slide with visual clues and give a few minutes for participants to create a story. After a short period of time, I will ask for volunteers to share their story with the group. We will be able to compare and contrast what we observe and discuss any other ideas that would add to the technique. I will also share several websites and other locations from which to create their stories.

Secret input: low prep activities to sneak in more comprehensible input
Research tells us that learners need to repeatedly interact with comprehensible language, but teaching students who crave novelty means that a teacher must be creative in order to figure out how to provide input in interesting ways.  The purpose of this session is to offer a range of strategies that provide high quality comprehensible input with little preparation and learn how to apply them to existing lessons. An added benefit of these strategies is that they can be implemented in flexible groupings, allowing teachers to meet expectations for interactive classrooms. After modeling a simple text in English, participants will engage in a series of comprehension based drawing and reading activities to model several strategies and brainstorm how to use the same basic tools to create more input based activities. The presenter will model setting student expectations for managing these types of activities as well as how to use movement, flexible groupings, and physical space to provide input.

Game Changer: Revamping Classroom "Games" to Bolster Proficiency
Students love to play games in class; however, are these classroom "games" truly helping students move along the path to proficiency or merely a means of "practicing" language? This session takes a look at the "games" we play and proposes ways to fine-tune them from a TPRS/CI perspective, turning them into vehicles for delivering engaging, communicative, comprehensible input.

Story Formulas
When I first began using TPRS I often struggled with co-creating an engaging story with student-generated details.  Stories would often fall flat or the classroom would erupt in frustration over whose details I had chosen. As a result I began using what I call Story Formulas to help me stay on track, maintain an interesting story line, and prevent classroom brawls over story details. In this presentation you will see the entire process of Story Formula creation, implementation, and preservation.

A long term TPRS/CI teacher training, including using a CI/TPRS curriculum
In this workshop I will  present and ask your opinion about a special long term CI/TPRS teacher training my colleague and I will give for the first time the coming school year. It's not only a long term teacher training of one school year, including (e-)coaching, but it also includes instructions how to use a(n already developed and used in the classroom) CI/TPRS curriculum. What a lot of teachers find is lacking, is the combination of a teacher training & coaching and already developed materials to use with their students. We hope to fill this gap with this long term CI/TPRS teacher training including a curriculum and we'd like to inspire you, but also discuss it with you and hear your comments for possible improvements.

BEYOND THE PLAY BUTTON
Although music and videos are essential vehicles for providing language input, it's can frequently be challenging to figure out how to properly implement them in the classroom.  We all know how to click play, but isn't there more?   In this session, Jim Wooldrdge, a.k.a. Sr. Wooly, will demonstrate a variety of practical activities that will give you the confidence to use music and videos in the classroom (and with none of the guilt!).  Plus, he will model how to win the class over so you have more class singalongs and fewer class eye-rolls.

Comprehensible Cultural Inquiry
How do we develop deep intercultural understanding while keeping our classes comprehensible?  Is it possible to discuss complex issues and topics of social justice using TPRS and other Comprehensible Input strategies?  How can we connect our learners to the magic of entering another culture while staying in the target language? Teachers who are new to teaching with Comprehensible Input often wonder how to approach their advanced level classes. Teaching with TPRS novels allows us to engage in a process of Comprehensible Cultural Inquiry that will help learners to make meaningful and personal connections to cultural topics through their own questions.  In this workshop we will explore how teaching with comprehensible novels through an Inquiry approach at advanced levels, can provide a pathway not only to increased proficiency, but to the promotion of intercultural understanding, respect and tolerance.
